    Wetland Protection

    Priorities Addressed by NRCS
NRCS, through a variety of programs and with the help from partners continues to address the district’s resource priorities in the following ways:

    1. The area has a strong soil conservation ethic millions of feet of terraces, waterways, diversions, tile outlets, and acres of no-till residue management have been installed.  NRD cost share programs and EQIP continue to provide incentives to have practices installed.

    2. Watershed Structures and small farm ponds have been installed to reduce erosion and flooding.  Programs that allow structures include PL 566, EQIP, WHIP and the NRD small dam program.

    3. Pasture and rangeland acres have and continued to be improved with fencing and the use of proper grazing techniques through EQIP.

    4. Water Quality, which has always been a secondary benefit from the installation of conservation practices, is gaining more attention.  Areas have been identified as water quality priority areas and receive special consideration through several programs.

    5. Streams and Saline Wetlands are resource concerns in the district.  WRP has provided an alternative in restoring wetland functions and values in Lancaster County.  Miles of conservation buffers have been installed around wetlands, creeks and streams in the district.
