Twin Platte NRD

Priorities Address by NRCS

The North Platte and Ogallala field offices address priorities associated with Soil, Water, Air, Plants, Animals, and Humans. We rely on many partners to assist in providing resource conservation to the people on the land.

  • The grazingland priority is addressed through land owner assistance with range improvements and grazing management.

  • Soil erosion reduction is addressed through the implementation of cropping systems, terraces, diversions, sediment, and erosion control structures, and other practices.

  • Staff focus on the water priority through irrigation system improvements and irrigation water management. Staff are to assist the irrigation districts as requested. Currently staff are working with the Brule and Ogallala Watersheds on implementing a strong Operation and Maintenance annual committee.

  • Wetland enhancement is a priority with our staff. It is made possible by voluntary landowner efforts and cooperation with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) utilizing their Wetland Initiative Program.

  • Wildlife habitat is also a priority with our staff. Our efforts are assisted by the Twin Platte NRD staff and the Nebraska Game and Parks Staff. We emphasize habitat through several financial assistance programs.

  • Information and Education activities are an important part of our annual activities. Staff assist with the Nebraska Range Youth Camp, Range Judging Activities, the High Plains Water Expo, Women in Science, and other school programs. Our recent primary school program has been a "Thank You" project that is facilitated by a volunteer in the Paxton Schools. An effort to educate landowners on the benefits of Prescribed Burning is also part of our information and education efforts.

  • The staff have been recently increasing their effort to promote conservation Buffers. The primary promotion is through the Conservation Reserve Program. Efforts include news releases and meeting presentations.
