Middle School Science Bowl News Release

NRCS SPONSORS NEBRASKA MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE BOWL COMPETITION
Lux Middle School Wins Science Bowl and Trip
to National Competition.
LINCOLN, January 27, 2008 – Lux Middle
School in Lincoln, Neb., was the winner of the 5th annual Nebraska
Middle School Science Bowl held Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008, at the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln. The Science Bowl is a fast-paced academic competition that
tests students' knowledge in math and science. A total of 30 teams from 19
schools across the state took part in Saturday’s competition.
Students on the winning Lux Middle School
team were; Jackson Fisher, Drew Bakenhaus, Jessica Qiu, Isaac Bohart and Michael
Liou with teacher/coach Rich Powers. The U.S. Department of Energy will provide
an expense-paid trip for the team where they will represent Nebraska at the
National Middle School Science Bowl competition in Golden, Colo., this coming
June.
The
runner-up was Gretna Middle School with team members Mitch Peterson, Katie
Gerdes, Brandon Purintu, Ben Stoltenberg and Aaron Ashley, and teachers/coaches
Rhonda Sparks and David Decent. Charles Culler Middle School in Lincoln, Neb.,
with team members Erica Elise Pribil, Xinci Tan, Ignacio Catalon, Nhat Nguyen
and teacher/coach Larry Peterson, placed third.

Pribil of Charles Culler Middle School won the “I’m Science Smart” medal for
answering the most questions during the morning round-robin competition.
Goodrich Middle School, Team A, from Lincoln, Neb., with team members Raymond
Fredrick Wundel, Leah Christine Waldvogel, Teagan Anthony Bassinger, Bryce David
Gruhn, and coaches Jodie Jantz and Camon Keith Chrisp, won the “Team Civility
Award”, which recognizes a team for showing “grace under pressure” to exemplify
good sportsman-like conduct.
The USDA
Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) coordinates the Nebraska Middle
School Science Bowl in conjunction with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Chemistry Department. Over 75 volunteers were recruited by NRCS to help run the
Nebraska Middle School Science Bowl.
