High School Science Bowl News Release

NRCS SPONSORS NEBRASKA HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE BOWL COMPETITION

Lincoln East High School Wins Nebraska Science Bowl and Trip to National Competition.

LINCOLN, February, 4, 2008 – Students from Lincoln East High School were the first and third place finishers of the 14th annual Nebraska High School Science Bowl held Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  The Science Bowl is a fast-paced academic competition that tests students' knowledge in math and science.  A total of 40 teams from across the state were registered in the competition. 

Members of the first place Lincoln East High School team A were; Ryan Pickerill, George Miller, Brady Gilg, James Hao, Alexander Churchill and coach Marcus Schmidt.  The U.S. Department of Energy will provide an expense-paid trip for the team to represent Nebraska in the National Science Bowl competition in Chevy Chase, Maryland, May, 1-6, 2008.   

The runner-up was Bellevue East High School with Nicholas Bigelow, Robert Meinders, Friend Olsen, Sara Smits and coach David Bossman.  Lincoln East High School team B with Camille Duhamel, Preston Bradley, Thomas Seewald, William Scheideler, Mong-Kuen Sun, and coach Karl Lautenschlager, placed third. 

Daniel Holtmeyer of Bellevue West High School won the “I’m Science Smart” medal for answering the most questions during the morning round-robin competition.  Lincoln East High School team A also won the “Team Civility Award”, which recognizes a team for showing “grace under pressure” to exemplify good sportsman-like conduct.  

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) coordinates the Nebraska High School Science Bowl in conjunction with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chemistry Department.  Over 80 volunteers were recruited by NRCS to help run the Nebraska High School Science Bowl.
