Middle Schools, January 31, 2009   High Schools, February 7, 2009

University of Nebraska, Student Union

Lincoln, Downtown Campus, 14th & R Streets

The 15th Annual Nebraska High School Science Bowl will be held Saturday, February 7, 2009, at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln City Campus Student Union.  The 6th Annual Nebraska Middle School Science Bowl will be held Saturday, January 31, 2009, at the same venue.  The Science Bowl is a fun, fast-paced, tournament-style academic competition that challenges and recognizes students' knowledge of science and mathematics.

The opening ceremony will begin at 9:00 a.m. followed by a round-robin competition from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon; a random drawing will place teams into four divisions for the round robin competition. The top four teams in each division will advance to the double elimination competition which will begin at 1:00 p.m.  Medals will be awarded to the top 4 teams.  The winning middle and high school teams will receive all expense-paid trips to the national competitions in Washington, DC, April 30-May 5, 2009.

The Department of Energy (DOE) sponsors the national competition. The website for the National Science Bowl is: http://www.scied.science.doe.gov/nsb/index.html.  At this website, there are helpful resources such as rules and practice questions.

A typical team comprises six people: four contestants plus one alternate contestant from Grades 9-12, and a coach, for the high school event; or four contestants plus one alternate contestant from Grades 6-8, and a coach, for the middle school event.  There is a $45.00 application fee per team ($90.00 for two teams) to participate in a Nebraska event. The application fee helps to defray the cost of meal vouchers and awards.
