Upper Big Blue WatershedApril, 2005CSP Enrollment Documents for ApplicantsDescription of WatershedThe total area in the watershed is 670,567 acres. This watershed is located in Butler, Hamilton, Polk, Seward, and York Counties in southeast Nebraska. There are 1354 farms in the watershed with an average size of 340 acres. The land uses in this watershed consist of irrigated cropland, dry cropland, pastureland, and rangeland. The topography is mostly level and gently rolling with steeper hillls along the major streams. Large depressional areas formed historical wetlands in this area known as the Rainwater Basin. The soils are mostly deep, well drained to moderately well drained silty soils that formed in loess. In the basin areas a claypan subsoil and poor drainage are typical. Cropland in the watershed totals 426,600 acres. Primary crops include corn and soybeans. Other crops include grain sorghum, wheat, and alfalfa. Pastureland and rangeland in the watershed totals 34,900 acres. Cool-season pastures consist mainly of smooth bromegrass and Kentucky bluegrass. Warm-season pastures are a native tallgrass mixture of mostly big bluesstem, switchgrass, and Indiangrass. Land Cover/Use
